  • What ingredients shall we toss into the bubbling cauldron today? Fear? Hope? Love? Loss? Disappointment? Delight? Watch them dissolve, evolve and resolve into the simmering stew of our lives. Is it time to move on? am I alone in the universe? is it me she loves? can I forgive the lie? Can we scry the answers to our queries by gazing into that swirling morass or by listening to the advice of a slightly off-beat G(r)eek Chorus?

Join the members of ShortBurst® Theatre R.A.W. as they explore the deepest, darkest, weirdest issues of life and laughter, guided, consoled and controlled by a less-than-profound cadre of Muses.

Helmed by Playhouse co-artistic director Chris DeCarlo, written by Evelyn Rudie, and crafted and performed via the internationally acclaimed ShortBurst® Theatre method, the production Smita Bagla, Victoria Bemis, Sydni Brown, Marty Cohen, Jazmin Dant, Bob Hucul, Linda Kohn, Jonathan Liu, Michael Starratt, Allie Trelles. ShortBurst® Theatre is a collaboration in which professional artists, tyro performers and members of the community at large pool their resources, their time, and their concerns, to create theatre that is relevant on a personal, local and global level, and do it all in a very short span of time, hence the name.

Over the past 36 years, ShortBurst® has created more than 4 dozen collaborative productions locally, nationally and with companies from 11 countries, many that have later become main stage and touring productions, fostering cultural exchange and understanding and making a tangible difference across the city and around the world.

“The performances and collaborations are excellent and very educative. Their work is brilliant!” Fusami Sugimine, Director Global Project, International Human Network, Japan.

  • Camerata Pacifica rings in the New Year with a compelling and unexpected mix of chamber masterworks both time-honored and contemporary featuring the highly anticipated Camerata Pacifica debut of South Korean-born violinist YuEun Gemma Kim, admired for “her exceptional virtuosity” (LA Opus). Four performances across Southern California are set for Sunday, January 14, 3 p.m., at Janet and Ray Scherr Forum in Thousand Oaks; Tuesday, January 16, 7:30 p.m., at The Huntington’s Rothenberg Hall in San Marino; Thursday, January 18, 8 p.m., at Zipper Hall in Downtown Los Angeles; and Friday, January 19, 2024, 7:30 p.m., Hahn Hall at Santa Barbara’s Music Academy.

The program opens with Mendelssohn’s beloved Piano Trio in D Minor, Op. 49, laced with driving energy, which spotlights Kim along with Principal Piano Gilles Vonsattel, “a pianist well worth watching” (The New York Times), and Principal Cello Ani Aznavoorian, whose “scorchingly committed performances…wring every last drop of emotion out of the music” (The Strad). Principal Clarinet Jose Franch-Ballester interprets Brahms’ lyrical and timeless Clarinet Sonata in E Flat Major, Op. 120, considered a touchstone of the clarinet repertoire.

The performance then takes a delightfully avant-garde turn with Principal Percussion Ji Hye Jung, an audience favorite, playing French-Slovenian composer Vinko Globokar’s ?Corporel, a mesmerizing performance art piece for solo percussionist in which the artist uses her own body and voice as instruments. Jung is also featured on Christos Hatzis’ Fertility Rites, a “compositional tour de force” (San Francisco Classical Voice) for five-octave marimba and tape that weaves in the haunting aural textures of prerecorded and manipulated Inuit throat singing.

For tickets ($75 at The Huntington, Hahn Hall and Zipper Hall; $80 at Janet and Ray Scherr Forum) and information visit www.cameratapacifica.org.
  • On an uncharted desert island, four teams play out the final round of THE GAME: TRAPPED, STRIPPED, STEREOTYPED. Is the struggle worth the reward? Is the Game what they prepared for? And is the reward ever what one expects it to be? It’s a tongue-in-cheek homage to Survivor, Desperate Housewives, CLUE, The Love Boat and Love is Blind, all rolled into one, with a whiff of White Lotus thrown in for good measure.

Admission includes post-show wine and island nibbles reception with the cast.
