  • Sustainably harvested white and red “silver tipped” fir trees from Northern California will be available for pickup on Saturday, November 30 in Ventura County and Sunday, December 1 in Santa Barbara County during “Christmas On The Ranch.” Pick-up locations are at Petty Ranch (11971 Darling Rd., Ventura) and Farm Supply Company (700 McMurray Rd., Buellton). Proceeds from the Christmas tree fundraiser will help support Students for Eco-Education and Agriculture (SEEAG) agriculture education and healthy eating programs for kids in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

Pickup time is from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Petty Ranch and 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Farm Supply Company. The trees are harvested in the northern Sierra Nevada mountain range to reduce overgrowth and fire risk and then donated to SEEAG. Trees are 6’ to 10’ tall. The cost is $200 per tree. For each tree sold, a matching $250 will be donated by SEEAG board members. SEEAG is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization so all tree purchases are tax-deductible. Trees can be pre-ordered by going to https://www.seeag.org/christmas-at-the-ranch. For questions about delivery, call 805-892-8155 or email info@seeag.org.
  • The town, the myth, the legend. If you’ve ever wondered if Carpinteria really is The World’s Safest Beach, which legend of Chismahoo is the real one, or if, indeed, Trader Joe’s is coming to town, you won’t want to miss Carpinteria Myths and Misinformation, the first in the 2025 Talk & Talkback Speaker Series hosted by the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History on Feb. 3 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the museum, 956 Maple Ave. in downtown Carpinteria.

Facilitated by Amy Orozco, Carpinteria Myths and Misinformation will take a look at some of the myths Carpinterians hold about themselves and their community. “The focus will be on the ‘Talkback’ part of the series. This isn’t going to be a Carpinteria-according-to-me lecture,” said Orozco, a museum board of trustee and local journalist. “We’re looking forward to conversation and learning about what others think. Attendees don’t have to join in the conversation, but they certainly will be encouraged to.”

Carpinteria Myths and Misinformation is free for Carpinteria Valley Museum members and $10 for nonmembers. The next talk in the series is Rincon Point and the California Dream with Stephen Bates and Vince Burns scheduled for 5 p.m. on March 20 at the museum.

  • “Of course, calling it a silent film is a misnomer – there will be plenty of music, and jazz is like a conversation between the players so there’ll be no shortage of dialogue.” – Wynton Marsalis

LOUIS is a captivating blend of vintage cinema and contemporary musical brilliance. This unique event features a silent film based loosely on the childhood of Louis Armstrong, a pivotal figure in jazz history, brought to life with a live score composed and performed by the renowned jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, Cecile Licad and an 11-piece all-star jazz ensemble. Directed by Dan Pritzker and shot in beautiful sepia tones by Academy Award-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond as a modern reimagining of early silent film, LOUIS (originally released in 2010) is an homage to Louis Armstrong and the birth of American music. The grand alleys and cemeteries of 1907 New Orleans provide a backdrop of magic for 6-year-old Louis as he navigates the colorful intricacies of life in the city and acquires his first cornet.

Winner of nine Grammy awards and a Pulitzer Prize in music, Wynton Marsalis is one of the most outstanding jazz musicians and trumpeters of this – or any other – generation. A favorite among jazz musicians and audiences worldwide, he is a brilliant composer and a bandleader in the tradition of Duke Ellington, and the driving creative force behind Jazz at Lincoln Center’s creation and success. Don’t miss this nearly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience Wynton Marsalis in this very special immersive experience. (LOUIS: Dan Pritzker, 2010, R, 90 min.)

The film is rated “R” – Restricted (Some Sexual Content)
  • Up next in the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History’s Talk & Talkback Speaker Series will be Jim Campos’s talk about the art of citrus crate labels. Campos, Carpinteria historian, educator, and former editor of the Citrus Label Society’s bi-monthly newsletter, The Citrus Peal, will provide a historical overview of citrus crate labels related to Carpinteria and Santa Barbara between 1885 and 1955. This illustrated history of one of Carpinteria's most historically important industries will include many rarely seen labels, as well as details of the varying types and styles of labels from decades past.

The 2025 Talk & Talkback Speaker Series is hosted by the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History. The Art of the Citrus Crate Label will be held on Thursday, July 10th from 5 p. m. to 6 p.m. at the museum, 956 Maple Ave. in downtown Carpinteria. The talk is free for members of the museum and $10 per person for visitors.

"This talk is a special opportunity to learn from one of the leading scholars on and collectors of citrus crate labels," said Jayme Yahr, the museum's director. "Not only are the labels vibrant and informative from a citrus industry standpoint, but they are also an important aspect of local history.” For more information on the Talk & Talkback Speaker Series, volunteering at the museum, or other questions, call (805) 684-3112, email info@carpinteriahistoricalmuseum.org, or visit carpinteriahistoricalmuseum.org.
