Join the Santa Barbara Symphony for its highly anticipated free Season Preview Kick-off Celebration on Thursday, September 18, 5:00–6:15 PM at the historic Lobero Theatre.

The program begins on the promenade at 4:30 PM with a no-host reception, where patrons can mix & mingle, play musical instruments from the Music Van program, and speak with staff about donor and volunteer opportunities. At 5 PM, Music & Artistic Director Nir Kabaretti takes the stage inside to share his vision and inspiration for the 2025/26 season. Guests will enjoy live performances, insider stories, and a sneak peek at the bold, genre-spanning programs ahead. Special guests include Principal Trombonist Dillon MacIntyre and more. DAVID CIPRIANI & AUSTIN WRINKLE WORKSHOP & PERFORMANCE
7-string, hybrid electric and Indian Slide Guitarist/composer/singer-songwriter Dave Cipriani, and world-renowned percussionist & drummer Austin Wrinkle touch the mystic and the earthy; bringing intense studies of Indian music, African, Jazz, Balkan, Classical, Rock and more into their unique world-music, heart embracing style of improvisation, compositions, and songs.

WORKSHOP: The World of Guitar!

I’ll demonstrate several different types of unusual guitars (7-string fingerstyle, electric guitar, hybrid guitar/bass, Indian) and show you some of the cool things that can be done that are out of the ordinary – playing multiple parts simultaneously, playing bass & guitar at same time (!), music from other cultures and more. We’ll show how ideas can cross over from one style to another or how they are similar or different.

The workshop will take place from 5:00-6:00, the performance at 7:00

The Community Environmental Council (CEC) and CarpEvents will co host the 2023 Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival—which is free to attend—at Alameda Park Saturday, April 29, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 30, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The 2023 festival will bring our community together for our first large festival since we were last in Alameda Park in 2019. Tommy Quayle is a singer, songwriter, and bandleader out of Ventura, California. Tommy plays all kinds of shows all over Southern California and occasionally makes his way to places like Austin, Texas and his home state of Massachusetts. From solo acoustic work to seven-piece rock band, Tommy brings his high-energy rock-folk-blues-country-punk mix and commanding stage presence. He’s been at it for almost 40 years playing tons of shows and releasing over 50 original songs on 6 releases. He has shared the stage with many music luminaries for thousands of people and still loves playing tiny coffee houses.

Since writing his first song in the fourth grade Tommy has always heard the siren call of music. He truly loves music. Not just his. All of it. He likes digging into a Stones rocker or a Neil Young ballad just as much as playing one of his own tunes.

Jarabe Mexicano captures the nostalgic spirit of their border roots with their brand of "Bordeño-Soul," which honors the musical tastes and cultural influences of its members. Jarabe, which translates to 'concoction,' highlights the eclectic mix of genres they g5rwperform ranging from Mexican Folk, Rock & Roll, and Norteño/Tex-Mex to Latin Rock, Trio Romántico, and popular Cumbia. Their traditional Mariachi string instruments and Norteño-inspired drums complement dramatic vocals in English, Spanish, and Spanglish, and show how this multi-generational ensemble embraces change while still honoring the past.

Recreational mathematics involves mathematical puzzles and games, often appealing to children and untrained adults, inspiring their further study of the subject. Can a similar analogy be drawn in biology? Without making any claims of usefulness, we will explore a wide range of puzzles and paradoxes from the living world: Can single cells be toroidal in nature? What would an animal from Flatland look like? Can cells “literally” talk to each other? Can single cells think? Can cells act as a mason and build out of rocks? Finally, we will discuss and share initiatives to democratize science and highlight the role of curiosity and observation in exploring the microscopic world.

Sustainably harvested white and red “silver tipped” fir trees from Northern California will be available for pickup on Tuesday, December 2 through December 5 at McGrath Family Farm (1012 West Ventura Blvd., Camarillo). Proceeds from the Christmas tree fundraiser will help support Students for Eco-Education and Agriculture (SEEAG) agriculture education and healthy eating programs for kids in Ventura County. Tree pickup time is from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The trees are harvested in the northern Sierra Nevada mountain range to reduce overgrowth and fire risk and then donated to SEEAG. Trees are 6’ to 10’ tall. The cost is $100 per tree. SEEAG is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization so all tree purchases are tax-deductible.
