The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) presents “Paddling into a Natural Balance” with Carpinteria-based freelance writer and photographer Chuck Graham on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 7:00. As part of his presentation, Chuck will recount his many adventures hiking and kayaking the Santa Barbara Channel Islands—and will share many of his award-winning photographs that document the islands and their recovery over the past 30+ years. Cost is free for SBMM’s Navigator Circle Members, $10 for all other members, and $20 for members of the public. There will also be a pre-lecture reception for members only from 6:15-6:45pm. About Our Speaker
Chuck Graham is a freelance writer and photographer, a beach lifeguard, and an island guide, leading kayak tours and backpacking trips at Channel Islands National Park for over 20 years. Born in Santa Monica, he moved with his family to Carpinteria in 1975. He studied at Santa Barbara City College, Westmont College, the Institute for Children’s Literature, and he also holds an honorary master’s degree from Brooks Institute of Photography recognizing his work, which has appeared in many local and national publications.

Graham’s stories and photos have appeared in National Geographic publications, Backpacker, Men's Journal, Outdoor Photographer, The Surfer's Journal, The Surfer's Path, Canoe & Kayak, Adventure Kayak, American Forests, BBC Wildlife Magazine, Outdoor California, Los Angeles Times, Santa Barbara Independent, Montecito Journal, Natural History Magazine, and High Country News. And his commercial clients have included, Patagonia, Channel Islands National Park, Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, California Coastal Commission, Los Padres National Forest, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Channel Islands Provisioners. Jorge’s work populates “Huelga! Photographs from the Frontlines” currently up at the Museum of Ventura County until October 31st. Jorge and Elena will talk about Jorge’s first-hand memories of farm labor strikes in the 1970s, his time with Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, and his role in the fight for civil rights.

The Elite Theatre Company is proud to announce its upcoming production of The Latinx Experience: Featuring Journey of the Skeletons, A Dia de los Muertos Story – a play by Dr. Max Branscomb directed by Juliana Acosta. The Experience runs for five weekends, beginning with classes and workshops the weekend of September 9th.

The play will run each weekend beginning on Friday, Sept 16th with a final performance on Saturday, October 8th. Sunday October 9th will be a Dia de los Muertos Community Celebration. Each performance weekend will also feature a variety of Latino Artists from our community, including dancers, poets, storytellers and musicians. Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 2pm with a special Thursday performance on October 6th, at 8pm.

Journey of the Skeletons: A Dia de los Muertos Story is a heart-warming comedy that follows a Latino family as they prepare to connect with their loved ones who must pass through the underworld to celebrate Dia de los Muertos. However, as fate would have it our beloved characters encounter challenges on their journey including the Lord of the Underworld herself.

Each performance will also feature a variety of Latino Artists from our community, including dancers, poets, storytellers & musicians. General admission $20; $17 for Students, Military & Seniors. Special group rate of 5 people at $10 per ticket. First weekend workshops led by Mr.G from the Inlakech Cultural Arts Center.

Pacific Jazz Orchestra, led by seven-time Grammy-nominated Artistic Director Chris Walden, launches its 2024-25 season with a program of exceptional straight-ahead jazz, swing, soul, and traditional big band sounds at two leading Southern California venues. The 40-piece hybrid big band and string orchestra features guest artists jazz guitarist/vocalist John Pizzarelli – hailed for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz” (Boston Globe) – and Sy Smith, “one of the hardest working women in soul music” (Plano Magazine).

The ensemble swings by Santa Barbara’s historic Granada Theatre on Friday, September 6, 7:00 pm.
