(February 26, 2024)--Nearly seven decades since they emerged from San Francisco's North Beach club scene to introduce the sounds of folk music into the mainstream and take the world by storm, The Kingston Trio return to their native California for their 2024 "Keep The Music Playing" national tour.
Credited for sparking the "American Folk Revival" or folk movement of the late 50s and early 60s with their commercial success (which at one point accounted for approximately 15% of Capitol records sales), and known for hits such as "Tom Dooley," "M.T.A. (The Man Who Never Returned)," and "Where Have All The Flowers Gone," The Kingston Trio will appear for ONE NIGHT ONLY on Tuesday, April 9 at The Lobero Theatre (33 E. Canon Perdido St.) in Santa Barbara. Formed in 1956 by Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, and Dave Guard (replaced by John Stewart at the height of the group's popularity in 1961), The Kingston Trio is one of the longest-operating bands touring today. Though the group has undergone multiple personnel changes and its founding members have since passed away, the music of The Kingston Trio lives on with the passing of the torch to three new members with intrinsic ties to the original: Mike Marvin (adopted son of founding member Reynolds), Tim Gorelangton (friend of Reynolds since boyhood and one of the few to record with him), and Buddy Woodward (who toured with the Trio). All three personally remember the iconic trio's performances as folk music made its extraordinary ascent to the pinnacle of popular culture at the top of the music charts--perhaps part of the reason its newest members sound so much like the original Trio.
Cited as an influence by recording artists as musically and generationally diverse as Bob Dylan, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and The Eagles, to comedian and banjo player Steve Martin, to contemporary artists such as the multi-Grammy® nominated Mumford & Sons and The Avett Brothers, The Kingston Trio occupies a unique, preeminent position in American musical history.

The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) is pleased to present “Southern California Beach Culture from George Freeth to World War II” a lecture by Patrick Moser taking place on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. The presentation, incorporating some of the stories from Moser’s book, Surf & Rescue, will be enhanced with original photographs of the people and places who built California beach culture in the first half of the 20th century. Cost is free for SBMM’s Navigator Circle Members, $10 for all other members, and $20 for members of the public. Moser’s presentation introduces the early history of California beach culture as we recognize it today—surfing, lifeguards, and the image of California’s beaches as places of fun, health, and sex appeal. The arc of that story began with the arrival of native-Hawaiian George Freeth in Southern California in 1907. He made headlines with his rescue of seven fishermen, an act of heroism that highlighted his innovative lifeguarding techniques; but he also funded California's first surf club and coached both male and female athletes including Olympic swimming champion and “father of modern surfing” Duke Kahanamoku. Freeth combined surfing and lifeguarding to create the foundation of what would become an important part of the Golden State’s global identity.

Santa Barbara Dentist to Reward Kids for Not Eating Candies During Halloween Event

Santa Barbara Dentist Dr. Michael Carley is holding a candy buy-back event at his office after Halloween.

Parents and kids who bring in their candy stash will get rewarded with $2 for every pound they bring!

Dr Carley, practicing dentistry for 15 years in Santa Barbara, has seen the harmful effects of excess sugar wreaking havoc on one’s health.

“This event will let parents turn trick or treating into a fun and healthy event and reward the child for making correct choices for his body!” Dr Carley said.

Earlier in October, Dr. Carley and his staff delivered over $9,000 worth of free dental treatments to local residents who could not afford dentistry during his Dentistry From The Heart Day.

Dr. Carley shared, “My team and I have always had a slogan: Treating people, not just teeth. Providing a free dental day aligns with our philosophy of taking care of people in need!”

Camerata Pacifica, noted for its adventurous musical offerings, continues its season with an intriguing program of remarkable works for percussion and piano that features two sets of musical spouses, April 1-6, 2025, at four Southern California locations.

The musical athleticism of acclaimed piano duo Ran Dank and Soyeon Kate Lee, spouses who “produce an entirely unified sound… (and) fool our ears into believing all the notes are coming from a single musician” (The Berkshire Edge) is showcased on Stravinsky’s electrifying The Rite of Spring for Piano Four Hands. They also perform Poulenc’s Elegie for Two Pianos, a tender and beautiful memorial to a friend, and J.S. Bach’s Three Chorale Preludes, arranged for piano duo by Hungarian composer György Kurtág.

Camerata Pacifica Principal Percussionist Ji Hye Jung and percussionist W. Lee Vinson, spouses as well and both lauded for their extraordinary talent and enthralling performances, join Dank and Lee to let their mallets fly on Bartók’s landmark Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion.

The performances are Tuesday, April 1, 7:30 pm, at The Huntington’s Rothenberg Hall in San Marino; Thursday, April 3, 8:00 pm, at Zipper Hall in Downtown Los Angeles; Friday, April 4, 7:00 pm, at Santa Barbara’s Music Academy of the West; and Sunday, April 6, 3:00 pm, at Thousand Oaks’ Janet and Ray Scherr Forum.
