  • Andrés Reséndez, a professor of history at University of California, Davis, will address the earliest sustained European exploration of large areas that become the United States, a venture that turned out to be an unmitigated disaster. Of the 300 explorers who landed in Florida in 1527, only four survived (three Spaniards in commanding positions and one African enslaved person). These survivors spent almost a decade living among Indigenous societies in Florida and Texas, then journeyed through parts of the American Southwest that no other Europeans or Africans had seen before. They lived by their wits, mastering half a dozen native languages and making sense of societies other Europeans could not begin to fathom.

Reséndez specializes in early European exploration and colonization of the Americas, the U.S.-Mexico border region, and the early history of the Pacific. The Organization of American Historians and Cal Lutheran’s Department of History and Alpha Xi Psi chapter of the Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society are sponsoring the free event. • The beloved Rudie-DeCarlo musical CINDERELLA celebrates its 40th anniversary with a stunning multi-media makeover to celebrate it’s 40th anniversary at the Playhouse. It’s Cinderella like you’ve never seen her before, with new songs, hilarious special FX, a silent movie segment that will have you falling out of your seat, dazzling costumes, amazing magical prestidigitation, and a story about being true to your dreams and loving yourself as you are that's as meaningful today as ever before. It’s the perfect fairytale for today's generation: a handsome prince (who yearns to be loved for himself, not his royal position), silly stepsisters (who ultimately discover that looks really aren't everything), a feisty (but genuinely well-meaning) stepmother, a silver-foxy (if slightly befuddled) King and a refreshingly independent Cinderella.
"An Enchanting Cinderella!” LA Times. Birthday Parties, hosted by gaily-clad fairytale characters, are available with every performance. Photo opps, too!

  • “Wonderful! This is genuine Lewis Carroll, updated with witty alliterations and puns. Skillful direction and humorous extractions from the original Alice gives everyone something to enjoy. Evelyn Rudie and Chris DeCarlo, ‘parents’ of the repertory company, are to be applauded for keeping children’s theatre alive and well.” PONY RIDE

Kids 2 to 102 join Alice as she accepts an invitation from the Queen of Hearts to return to the Wonderland of her youth. Will Alice prevail, or are the Cards stacked against her? Will the Queen suffer a heart attack? Lovely audience participation throughout the production helps Alice set a topsy-turvy Wonderland aright in this zany musical comedy.

“A winning blend of vaudeville, English pantomime and music hall.” Drama-logue

The internationally acclaimed Family Theatre musical comedy, performed on three continents over the past 45 years, is presented by renowned Actors’ Repertory Theatre, and features Holly Gibson, Amanda Hornberger, Isabel Lindley, J.T. Melaragno, Michala Peltz, Megan Wright with Cydne Moore, Joseph Perez and Graham Silbert.

“STRONGLY RECOMMENDED! A splendid children’s theatrical experience with a terrific new twist. The quality of performance is so pure and bright that children are fascinated throughout, all the while being exposed to superior theater that does not pander to their young age. The music and lyrics by Evelyn Rudie are the magic of the show. They provide a style and energy that keeps the children glued to the action.” L.A. PARENT

Gorgeous costumes by award-winning designer Ashley Hayes, lilting musical numbers and a charmingly bedecked rose garden enhance the "clever clowning and buoyant silliness" (L.A. Times) of this audience favorite crowd-pleaser. Written and directed by Evelyn Rudie and Chris DeCarlo.
