Ventura County Astronomical Society hosts it's first Family Friendly Star Party of 2023 at the Moorpark College Observatory on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 8 pm. Gates Open at 7. Please arrive early to get a priority ticket to enter the dome and look through the observatory's 6-inch Takahashi Telescope. Professor Hal Jandorf starts the evening at the open-air amphitheater with a preview of what's up. Then we move to the observation deck where VCAS members have dozens of telescopes set-up and ready to go. Those who have priority tickets will be called in groups of ten to enter the Dome, no more standing in line all night! Only 100 tickets will be given out and after that those who didn't get one will be called to line up, but only if time permits. This is a free event sponsored by the Moorpark College Foundation. Recommended for Children 6 and up. Please, no pets

FOL memberships may be purchased in advance at slofol.org or beginning at 2:30 at the Vets Hall on February 29. 40,000 books, CDs, and DVDs for children, teens, and adults will be on sale across numerous categories. Most books will be priced at $1.50 per inch; CDs and DVDs at $.50 each. On Sunday, March 3, prices will be reduced further to $5/bag or $10/box from 1 to 6 PM. For almost everyone, the very word "Motown" is synonymous with the great songs and artists of the 60s and 70s- not the auto industry! But why Detroit, and why those decades? In this class we will explore the historic relevance of that musical hub of success as we discuss the songs and bios of those great artists. No doubt Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, 4 Tops and Smoky Robinson need no introduction! It is unusual that one Record Company could produce these artists and so many more over those years. We'll also discover the behind-the-scenes people that made it all work. Come join us as we share those musical memories of Motown --- Detroit's other industry!

Tony Moon has spent 60 successful years in the music business. Beginning in 1960, he joined the L.A. group Dante and The Evergreens, which was managed and produced by Lou Adler and Herb Alpert. He later moved to Nashville, becoming the guitarist and conductor for Brenda Lee. Tony also began playing on recording sessions and was Nashville's first rock independent music producer, working with five major labels. He scored several big hits for The Vogues, including "5 O' Clock World." Tony has won several awards as a songwriter and music publisher. His songs have been released by artists as diverse as Porter Wagoner, Willie Nelson, Vickie Carr, Pearl Jam, and The Beatles.

He currently administers several Music Publishing Companies and a New York Entertainment Company.

The Fifty and Better (FAB) program was designed for people 50+ years of age, seeking intellectual stimulation through university level courses (without the pressure of grades) for the sake of learning and social engagement.

Exploring Creativity - Ages 6 – 11 Exploring Creativity nurtures and promotes creativity in Elementary students through fun activities and art projects. Classes cover a variety of mediums.

A Songwriter’s Open Mic
Hosted by Ventura songwriter Henry Stewart

This is an evening of acoustic open mic musical entertainment for songwriters. Our focus is to give voice to our local talent in an environment that promotes a professional show experience complete with a quiet and attentive audience of our peers. We have performers come from far and wide to enjoy our stage. Doors open at 6 pm, Henry warms up the mic at 6:45, and the show starts at 7 pm. Each performer gets 10 minutes in the spotlight. One cover song only per set. We are thrilled by the amazing amount of talent, of all ages, that forms our Listening Room community!

This event is a community fundraising show that encourages donations to support our Namba Performing Arts Space. Drinks will be available for purchase. Vocals and instruments will be run through the excellent sound system; microphones, monitors, direct in jacks, and the house grand piano are available.
