The man who's led Ventura County's public school educational efforts for more than a decade has announced he's going to retire. Ventura County Superintendent of Schools Stan Mantooth says he'll step down in February of 2021, after more than four decades in the field.
Mantooth began his career as a janitor working for the Los Angeles Unified School District. He worked his way up through the field, spending several years with the Oak Park School District.
Mantooth became an Assistant Superintendent in the Ventura County Office of Education in 1996, and was appointed as Superintendent in 2008. He was re-elected three times.
During his tenure, high school graduation rates increased in the county. He oversaw the addition of an education center for training and workshops, as well as construction of a new school for children with autism.
The County Board of Education will appoint someone to complete his term, and the post will be on the ballot in 2022.
