211 Help Line On South Coast Saw Huge Increase In Calls In Aftermath Of Natural Disasters

The 211 Help Line in Santa Barbara County has been an alternative to the 911 Emergency Line to provide assistance in non-life threatening situations.

It has been very valuable during the recent disasters when questions about evacuations, assistance from government agencies, or finding contacts for available aid have been coming in.

The line can also be valuable for many other services, including counseling.

The 211 phone lines are staffed 24 hours a day.

Operators say that they had typically been getting around 500 calls a month, but during the recent natural disasters, that number went up to 300 calls a day.
