Tree Poisonings On Central Coast Still Under Investigation
A Central Coast city is continuing its investigation into the intentional poisoning of some trees.
Santa Maria officials say in June, one of the city’s landscaping supervisors noticed that some trees on Main and Taft Streets were dying. An examination showed they’d been drilled or hacked into, and that it appeared someone injected something into the trees.
An arborist examined the tree tissue, but was unable to determine exactly what had occurred. The three dying trees have been removed.
City officials say that a person admitted killing one of the trees, saying he didn’t realize it was a protected tree which required a permit for removal. To resolve the issue, he paid the permit fee and will pay to plant two other trees in another area.
