Santa Barbara County public health officials are launching an initiative to educate the public about the potential dangers of marijuana.

The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department’s digital and social media-based cannabis education campaign includes a series of videos that uses science-based research to target teens and their parents.

“The brain continues to develop into your early 20s. So using cannabis regularly in your teens can lead to physical changes in your brain. It can affect your memory, learning, attention,” says Shantal Hover-Jones with the Public Health Department.

She says the campaign also focuses on the dangers for pregnant and breastfeeding women.

“The baby may be born with a lower birth weight. The baby is more likely to have health problems, specifically in the first year of life. And then the growth and development of the baby’s brain can be harmed.”

This campaign runs through September.
