You can learn more about the universe over the next two weeks. Renowned astronomers will be holding public talks on the South Coast.

Princeton University astronomy professor David Spergel has measured the age of the universe at 13.8 billion years and the size at least 60 billion light years, if not infinite. And he has a prediction for its future.

“Our data today suggests the universe will end in ice -- that it’ll expand forever and ever, get colder and colder,” he says.

Spergel says while 5% of the universe is made up of atoms; the rest is a mystery.

“We can sense its there through its gravitational effects. But we don’t know what it is,” he says.

Spergel will speak on Wednesday, October 31 at 7 pm at the New Vic Theatre in Santa Barbara as part of a free talk series by Goleta-based Las Cumbres Observatory.

On November 7th, UCLA astronomy professor Andrea Ghez – who confirmed that a supermassive black hole lies at the center of the Milky Way – will be speaking.
