Bicycle advocates are hoping to bring a bike share network to the Santa Barbara area.
The Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition envisions a fleet of self-service bikes available 24 hours a day in locations all around the Santa Barbara area. While this is only an idea, it’s a concept advocates are hoping to implement.
Eve Sanford with the Coalition says a bike share feasibility study was conducted and found that such a system could thrive in the region.
"It would reduce demand for parking. It would lower traffic congestion. It would really give people the option to come to town and park once and still be able to move throughout the city and visit the locations they're traveling to," said Sanford.
The study also found that the most desired locations for bike share are in downtown Santa Barbara, on the UC Santa Barbara and Santa Barbara City College campuses and in Isla Vista.
The coalition is in talks with Santa Barbara city officials in hoping to start the program soon.
