An unarmed Minuteman III Missile lifts off from Vandenberg Air Force Base Thursday morning

It was a sight which lit up the sky over the Central and South Coasts.

An unarmed Minuteman III missile was successfully test launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base Thursday morning.

The 12:27 a.m. launch was at the very beginning of a six hour launch window.  The unarmed missile traveled more than four thousand miles to a test range in the South Pacific.

It's the latest in an ongoing series of launches from the base intended to test the readiness of equipment and flight crews.
