A man who’s helped guide Ventura County through legal issues and questions for three decades is retiring.
Leroy Smith joined the County Counsel’s Office in 1989, and became County Counsel in 2010. Smith advised the county on subjects ranging from the wording of controversial ordinances to how to handle potentially costly lawsuits.
County officials have high praise for Smith, noting that he helped them deal with a number of difficult issues.
Chief Assistant County Counsel Michael Walker will serve as Acting County Counsel while a nationwide search take place for a permanent replacement for Smith.
