Efforts Underway To Cap Another Leaky Oil Well On South Coast

The State Lands Commission has begun the process of capping the next oil well leaking off of Summerland beach.

The project director is aiming to select a firm by November; work will take place from May to June of 2019.

The Becker Well off Summerland was capped in near-shore waters as the first in a series of well projects that came to fruition after residents and state senator Hannah-Beth Jackson used aerial photos of leaking oil, as well as other examples of the decades-old leaks from abandoned wells, to show the impacton  coastline.

Jackson's Assembly Bill 44 provides funding for other cleanup efforts including the current one.

The next target well is said to be farther out on the ocean and a clear environmental problem.
