On Second Anniversary Of Refugio Oil Spill, A Look At The Aftermath

Today is the anniversary of the Refugio Oil Spill from the Plains All-American Pipeline west of Goleta.

The broken line leaked 142,000 gallons onshore and into the near-shore waters, with some of the oil traveling as far 100 miles.

In the ensuing years, criminal charges were filed against the company and one employee.

Any possible schedule for repair, inspection, or reuse of the pipeline are unknown.

The pipe is the major connector for oil producers, including Venoco, which has been shutdown in the area for the last 24 months.

Citing, among other things, financial difficulties, Venoco announced that it would no longer produce oil off Goleta, and would remove the platform.
