An autopsy is pending in connection with the death of a man in the Santa Barbara County jail.

Drug overdose suspected in death.

A man who was taken into custody for a parole violation died later that day at a Santa Barbara County jail.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputies were doing a routine welfare check at a home in the Santa Maria area Wednesday when they say they discovered a man there was violating his parole. He was arrested and taken to the Northern Branch Jail in Santa Maria.

Deputies say he was uncooperative. They say after he was put into a jail cell, they noticed he became unconscious. Jail personnel started life-saving steps, including the use of naloxone, which is administered in suspected drug overdose cases.

The 33-year-old man temporarily regained consciousness. But, he was taken to a hospital where he later died. An autopsy is pending. He's being identified as Jaime Angel Gonzalez of Santa Maria.
