Investigators are trying to figure out why a woman, who was stuck and killed by a car on Highway 101 on the South Coast, was on the roadway.

It happened just before midnight Monday, on the 101 near Castillo Street in Santa Barbara. CHP investigators say a southbound car hit the woman as she walked onto the slow lane of the highway.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. There’s no word yet on her identity.

The driver of the car was unhurt.

The crash shut down southbound lanes of the 101 for about two hours, with traffic rerouted onto surface streets.
