Driver arrested after car hits truck on Highway 101 in Santa Barbara County, killing passenger

CHP investigators think alcohol was factor in fatal crash.

The driver of a car is facing gross vehicular manslaughter charges after the car he was driving on Highway 101 in Santa Barbara County smashed into the back of a truck, killng his passenger.

It happened early Friday morning between Carpinteria and Summerland, in the Padaro Lane area.

CHP investigators say a car which was headed southbound smashed into the back of a southbound dump truck. The car then veered off of Highway 101, and hit two trees. The car's passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the victim wasn't released.

The car's driver was seriously injured. CHP officers say while the investigation is continuing, thy arrested Jonathan Montoya of Oxnard for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

The truck driver wasn't hurt.
