80-Year-Old Woman Pleads Guilty To Voluntary Manslaughter In Ventura County

Her longtime 84-year-old companion was shot to death

Prosecutors say an 80-year-old Ventura County woman admitted fatally shooting her longtime partner.

Simi Valley Police were called to a home in July of 2016 by reports of a man not breathing. They discovered the body of Salvatore Orefice. The 84-year-old man had been shot to death.

Detectives say Mary Karacas admitted to the shooting. Prosecutors say the Simi Valley woman pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter, as well as to an assault charge for an attack on a fellow jail inmate.

It’s expected she’ll be sentenced to 14 years in state prison.
