San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's detectives arrest Paul Flores last week at his San Pedro home for the 1996 murder of Cal Poly student Kristin Smart

Preliminary Hearing In Kristin Smart Case Set For July

The man accused of attacking, and murdering a Central Coast college student nearly 25 years ago entered a not guilty plea in court.

Paul Flores is charged with the 1996 murder of Kristen Smart. Flores was a classmate of Smart’s at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Prosecutors say he walked her back to school after an off-campus party. But, they say he attacked, and killed her in his dorm room.

Flores was a person of interest in the case for years. But, investigators say they only recently gathered enough evidence to formally charge him in the 19-year-old’s death.

Ruben Flores also entered a not guilty plea in connection with the case. The 80-year-old man is accused of helping his son hide the murder.
