A Ventura County congresswoman is proposing that warning labels be put on all new firearms sold as an effort to prevent suicides. Democratic Congresswoman Julia Brownley of Westlake Village introduced the proposed new law. It would require firearm manufacturers and retailers to include stickers on guns with the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.
Brownley says the labels would provide a critical connection for people in crisis there is someone they can turn to for help. A number of suicide prevention groups have endorsed the proposal.
They cite statistics which show that firearm suicides make up two thirds of all gun deaths in the United States.
