Voters in one Central Coast community had more than the state recall election on their ballots. Lompoc voters were asked whether they wanted to increase revenue for the city by hiking its cannabis tax, a proposal they overwhelmingly approved.
Measure Q called for moving the city from a flat annual tax on cannabis cultivation and sales to one based on sales amounts. The shift would generate an estimated $1.2 million in additional revenue annually.
More than 6,400 voters weighed in the proposal, approving it by a 76% to 24% margin. It only needed a straight majority to pass.
The new tax rate will range from a half cent for up to $10 million a year or less than sales, to 2.5 cents for more than $55 million dollars in sales annually.
