A bill by a South Coast legislator intended to protect wildfire victims against tax increases has been signed into law by the governor.
AB 2013 provides property tax relief for people who lose their business, or property owners and want to rebuild. The new law allows victims to rebuild with safety improvements without triggering a reassessment of their land.
The legislation by Democratic State Assemblywoman Jacqui Irwin of Thousand Oaks was sponsored by the California Assessor’s Association. It had bipartisan support as it moved through the state legislature.
The legislation is retroactive to 2017, which means it will help current wildfire victims as well as those from the Thomas and Woolsey brush fires.
