There’s been controversy over whether a statue of Father Junipero Serra should remain in downtown Ventura, in from of Ventura City Hall.
Father Serra is known as one of the founders of California’s historic missions. But, there’s been controversy about the way the settlers treated Native Americans.
City leaders, members of the Chumash tribe, and the pastor at the San Buenaventura Mission have been working on a peaceful resolution to the issue, which would involve moving the statue to private property.
The city is hosting the first of two virtual discussions about the issue. Wednesday night’s meeting will not discuss moving the statue. It’s a review of the landmark status of the statue. On July 7th, the Ventura City Council will look at the relocation issue.
