A new Coast Guard cutter which will be stationed in Southern California will be named after an officer who was killed trying to intercept some drug smugglers in the Channel Islands.
The 154 foot long cutter will be named Terrell Horne III.
Horne was a Coast Guard Senior Chief Petty Officer who in an inflatable boat in December of 2012 which was trying to intercept some drug runners off of Santa Cruz Island. The smugglers intentionally rammed the small Coast Guard craft, and Horne was fatally injured.
The new cutter is one of four new craft being deployed on the West Coast during the next year. The Coast Guard has already named one of its buildings in Los Angeles after Horne.
