From a field of 50 candidates from across the country, the Santa Barbara Unified School District winnowed the field for superintendent down to one.

Hilda Maldonado has been appointed as the new superintendant for the SBUSD.

Maldonado is currently the Associate Superintendent of Leadership and Partnership at the Los Angeles Unified School District.

She'll begin her new term on July 1, with a salary of $250,000.

Maldonado will be replacing Cary Matsuoka, who announced his retirement one year shy of the end of his current contract.

Matsuoka had been under fire over the controversial firing of the principal at San Marcos High School, which lead to a lawsuit.

He's also been criticised over his handling of the Multimedia Arts and Design (MAD) Academy, where an administrator allegedly made inappropriate contact with students over text message, and proficiency scores for students in the third thru eighth grade went below what they had been previously.

Matsuoka departs at the end of June.
