Santa Barbara County Firefighters have gained the upper hand on a small but stubborn fire that was very visible Monday afternoon in San Marcos Pass.

The fire began at around 4:30 p.m. along the roadside on Highway 154 just before West Camino Cielo, and burned towards East Camino Cielo.

Some homes were at times threatened, with a few residents choosing to evacuate.

Firefighters from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department teamed up with others from the Los Padres National Forest, along with the San Marcos Pass Volunteer Fire Department, managed to keep the size to around five acres.

The cause is unknown, but it did start right at the roadside. Tuesday's rain is expected to douse any remaining flames.
