The Paseo Nuevo Mall in downtown Santa Barbara, which has been open for 30 years, is getting a new look.

At an announcement Tuesday designs for the renovation were revealed, and then shovelfuls of dirt were ceremonially tossed into the air to kick off the work.

Pacific Retail Partners, who are the owners, issued a statement along with area officials saying that there will be a new, refreshing motif.

That would include outside gathering areas, firepits, entertainment, curated art, and new stores with a local flavor, though no store names were announced.

The future of the vacant Macy's store also remains a mystery.

No new plans have been announced for the lot on the corner of Ortega and State streets.
