Santa Barbara Considers Limits On Liquor Licenses And Serving Hours

Santa Barbara is planning more analysis and discussion about new alcohol licenses, controls and possible limitation on serving hours.

This comes after police have released information comparing the number of liquor licenses in the area and calls for service.

They say the city has statistics much higher than most, and that it has become a health and safety issue.

One suggestion is to require new liquor licenses to have a cutoff on sales at midnight, though it faced opposition from restaurant owners who say their guests - including tourists from Europe - often dine late and are still there after midnight.

A more detailed review is underway and ordinance changes could be suggested in coordination with the state Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
