Many workers from Amgen, the Thousands Oaks based biotech company that sponsors a bicycle tour of California, did not get to watch the race coming through the South Coast region on Monday.

Instead, they were helping in the disaster-torn region of Montecito.

"We've moved six dumpsters worth [of debris] already," says Abe Powell of the all-volunteer bucket brigade.

Montecito resident and Amgen VP Bill Ridge was also part of the cleanup crew.

He says that his staff gave up a beach cleanup day to join him in Montecito, after he showed them pictures of the damage at an all-staff function.

"Most of the people who've gone here and looked around, they couldn't comprehend the amount of destruction that has happened," Ridge says.
