There is huge news for a South Coast community college, and some of its future students. Thanks to a state grant, Ventura College is going to get a student housing complex.
The cost of housing is a major obstacle to many college students in California. In Ventura County, the media gross rent is more than $1800 a month, so it can push college out of reach for some students.
The governor recently signed AB 183, which makes more than $540 million available for student housing projects at 11 campuses.
Ventura College will get $62 million. The money will fund a 95 unit complex, which will be able to accommodate about 300 students. It will provide low cost housing in the $400 to $900 a month range. The complex will be on campus property, with construction expected to start next year.
The legislation also provides grants for Moorpark and Oxnard Colleges to do studies on the feasibility of creating their own affordable housing for students.
