There’s excitement in a South Coast city over just announced plans to build a public aquatic center. Efforts to raise money for the estimated $40 million project got a big boost Friday with word of a major chunk of funding for the project.
It’s an ambitious plan calling for construction of a center with an Olympic-size competition pool, an instructional pool and water play areas for kids in Oxnard’s College Park.
Democratic State Senator Monique Limon of Santa Barbara announced she secured $5 million in state funding for the project which she says would be an important addition for the community. Limon says as a local school board member, when she would talk to kids about their dream school, it always included a pool.
Oxnard officials are hoping to use bond money to pay for the rest of the project. The city will hold community meetings on exactly what should be a part of the center. The goal is to have it buil, and ready for use in four years.
