Drivers At South Coast Beach Confused By New Parking Setup

Some new angle parking at Santa Barbara's East Beach has some drivers confused.

It used to be parallel parking, but the city has increased the number of parking spaces there by 50% through conversion of the spots to angled parking.

"Generally speaking, people don't like change and when something is different they're hesitant," says area volleyball coach John Lee. "So I'm trying to give it a chance, but I've seen several near-misses already."

The angled parking requires drivers to back into the spaces, as part of a plan to reduce accidents.

Signage is in place in the area to let drivers know about backing in, and directional signs are posted to show people the best way to back their vehicles up safely.
