Authorities say a surfer is dead following an accident on the Central Coast.

It happened at around 10 Friday morning, at Pismo Beach.

One of the most significant surfing events in California will be taking place on the South Coast on the final weekend of January.

The decision on when to hold the event is based on specific weather conditions, which aligned favorably and allowed organizers to announce that the Rincon Classic was on.

It was a big weekend for surfers on the Central and South Coasts, with what’s known as “king tides” hitting the region’s beaches. Some Cal State Channel Islands researchers are trying to use the combination of surfers, and the monster tides to help us learn more about what’s happening short term, and long term along our coastline.

Dangerous surf conditions led to a number of rescues of sufers on the South Coast Wednesday.

Santa Barbara County firefighters used jet skis, and even a helicopter to help surfers involved in a number of incidents.
