A South Coast zoo has raised more than a half million dollars to build a new, larger home for its lion. America’s Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College has a five year old African Lion. More than 100 donors contributed money to the effort, with Moorpark College adding $200,000. The new enclosure is being named after the lion, and will be called Ira’s Kingdom.

Three South Coast colleges are taking a step toward going green, with a new effort from the Ventura County Community College District.

Ventura, Moorpark, and Oxnard college comprise the VCCCD, and the three schools will start construction on new solar-covered parking next year.

More than 160 middle and high school students took part this weekend in a cybersecurity contest in Ventura County as part of a statewide competition.

Moorpark College was one of 12 regional sites to host the California Mayors Cyber Cup.

A zoo on the South Coast is being transformed into a winter wonderland this weekend.

America’s Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College is holding its annual Artic Lights Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. The zoo, which is part of an exotic animal training and management program at the college, is decorated in the holiday spirit. On Saturday, kids play in real snow, and on Sunday, animals play in the snow.

"Maybe our badger might come in the snow or our African serval or our raccoon might come out and experience the snow.," Alisa Behar with the Zoo said. "And, some of these animals have never seen snow before, so it's a fun reaction we get from some of the animals." 

A South Coast college which cancelled some of its athletic programs due to budget cuts has announced with its funding situation improving, it will add some sports.

Moorpark College will again have a wrestling team beginning in 2017. The college’s participation in the sport was canceled six years ago. Besides adding wrestling back to its sports offerings again, Moorpark College will offer women’s sand volleyball.   Sand volleyball is one of the fast growing collegiate sports.

Video games can be fun to play, and can sometimes be used for therapy or education. It’s turned into a $35 billion dollar a year industry in the U.S. Now, a Ventura County college wants to help students cash in on the boom, by offering a new college degree in video game design. The $35 billion dollar a year video game industry is creating new career opportunities.
