A Ventura County congresswoman is proposing that warning labels be put on all new firearms sold as an effort to prevent suicides. Democratic Congresswoman Julia Brownley of Westlake Village introduced the proposed new law. It would require firearm manufacturers and retailers to include stickers on guns with the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.

A Santa Barbara congressman is co-author of a new bipartisan bill intended to legally allow guns to be taken away from people facing a mental health crisis. The “Extreme Risk Protection Order Act” would allow family members, or law enforcement authorities to ask a judge to issue orders to temporarily take weapons from people who might pose a risk to themselves, or others.

A city on the South Coast has focused its law enforcement efforts on taking firearms away from people who are not allowed to have them.

In 2018, Camarillo Police Department’s Special Enforcement Detail seized 85 handguns and rifles and more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition. They included assault rifles, a grenade launcher, high-capacity magazines and ammunition designed to pierce bulletproof vests.

An effort to get some guns out of the community on the Central and South Coasts is being called a big success, with more than 250 weapons collected.

Santa Barbara Police and the Coalition Against Gun Violence held an anonymous gun buyback over the weekend.

Thousands of people across the South and Central Coasts are marching in support of gun control as part of the national March for Our Lives movement.

In downtown Ventura on Saturday, a march and rally organized by high school students brought people of all ages to Plaza Park.

Eighteen-year-old Sofia Felino, a student at Santa Barbara City College, says she felt compelled to march.

Police say they found a rifle, ammunition, and other weapons in the car of a high school student who got into a confrontation with a teacher in.

It was a stunning discovery outside of Ventura’s Buena High School. It started at around 12:30 Thursday afternoon, when a 16 year old student got into a confrontation with a teacher.

The teacher says the student wanted to go to the bathroom, the teacher said, but the 16 year old boy left anyway.  The teacher told police school he used the word gun as he left.
