Activity is back to normal at a South Coast beach which was the scene of a shark scare over the weekend. A Great White shark was spotted at Goleta Beach Saturday afternoon.

The Memorial Day weekend is a popular time to take a dip in the ocean and Central and South Coast beaches.

But, the ocean at one of the most popular beaches in Santa Barbara County is going to remain closed.

It’s one of the most popular beaches on the South Coast, attracting an estimated 1.5 million visitors a year.

But, Santa Barbara County has spent an estimated two million dollars since 2015, and 12 million since 1995 to protect the beach, and its infrastructure like its pier, restrooms, and parking lots from storm-driven erosion. One top county leader is suggesting the county should get rid of it.

Expensive efforts to protect a popular South Coast beach from erosion apparently aren’t working, prompting Santa Barbara County officials to ask serious questions about the beach’s future.

Goleta Beach is used by an estimated 1.5 million people a year. But, it faces serious erosion problems which threaten everything from its pier to parking lot.
