A violent chase in northern Santa Barbara County ended with a shootout and the death of suspect Fernando Castro.

Castro was the focus of a search by several law enforcement agencies fro the Bay Area down the coast.

Two trucks were involved in a head on collision Wednesday on Highway 154 on Figueroa Mountain Road, closing that section of San Marcos Pass in Los Olivos.

One vehicle was a pickup, the other was a large tractor-trailer beer truck.

Eyewitnesses say the person in the pickup was driving erratically, in and out of the appropriate lane, prior to the accident.

Santa Barbara County Supervisors voted Monday to support a new jail in Santa Maria with $80 million in state funds allocated for construction costs.

Contracts could be ready in July after more financial analysis, to help deal with cost estimates that recently came in $11 million higher than anticipated.

The cause of a fire remains under investigation after a weekend blaze near the 101 freeway in Santa Barbara County.

The Santa Barbara City Fire Dept. is trying to find out how a fire started in the brush and trees along the freeway at Bath Street about 11 p.m. Saturday night.

Flames and the fire's glow could be seen for several blocks when the fire spread into tall trees.

It’s called Senior Day, and it’s at the Ventura Family YMCA where many seniors are already members.

“This is really all about making sure seniors have everything that they need,” said Executive Director Amy Bailey Jurewicz.

California Strawberry Festival

About 60,000 people are expected to attend a festival this weekend that celebrates a fruit grown on the South Coast. It’s the 33rd Annual California Strawberry Festival that takes place this weekend at Strawberry Meadows of College Park in Oxnard.

"It's probably the best thing to happen to Oxnard, where we feature the strawberry and invite families to come enjoy this two-day festival," said Kim Gibas, the festival's chairperson.

A man sporting a bloody hand in the lobby of a Motel 6 said Monday his wound came from an accidental gunshot.

The sheriff's department came to the scene of the Carpinteria motel and the man was rushed to Santa Barbara's Cottage Hospital.

A South Coast church which was slowly losing its congregation realized it would have to close its doors.

That spurred church members to decide to use their resources in a way that would continue its tradition of helping people long after the building was gone.

Santa Barbara County’s District Attorney and State Attorney General Kamala Harris are holding a joint news conference in Santa Barbara later this morning to announce criminal indictments in connection with last year’s Refugio State Beach Oil Spill.

The authorities haven’t yet released details about the indictments.

The nation’s largest cycling race comes to the South Coast today.

Stage Three of the Amgen Tour of California will start in Thousand Oaks, and take competitors more than 100 miles to a finish on Gibraltar Road, in the foothills above Santa Barbara. It starts at Amgen’s corporate headquarters in Thousand Oaks at 11:15.

There will be rolling road closures as the race passes through the region during the late morning, and early afternoon hours. The course includes section of Highways 1, 33, 150, and 192.

Investigators say an arsonist started a fire at the Art Essentials store in downtown Santa Barbara Sunday at 8 a.m.

The nation’s largest cycling race is underway, and headed to the Central and South Coasts.

Peter Sagan won the first leg of the Amgen Tour of California San Diego yesterday. The Slovak cyclist is the current world champion. Today, the cyclists race from Pasadena to Santa Clarita.

Then, on Tuesday, the tour comes to our region. Stage Three will take cyclists from Thousand Oaks to Santa Barbara, and Stage Four is Morro Bay to Monterey.

The bodies of a man and a woman have been discovered inside a home in Oxnard, and detectives are investigating the case as a homicide.

Oxnard Police Sergeant Bakari Myers says officers were called to the 5400 block of Barrymore Drive just before 5 p.m. yesterday.

"Upon arrival, officers discovered a male and a female deceased from apparent gunshot wounds," he said.

Conejo Valley Days

A large festival that attracts thousands of people to the Conejo Valley is celebrating its 60th anniversary as it continues through the weekend. Conejo Valley Days started on Wednesday, May 11 and runs through Sunday, May 15 at Conejo Creek Park South in Thousand Oaks.
