Ventura County is getting a new court commissioner.

Senior Deputy District Attorney Derek Malan will become the county’s newest court commissioner August 8th, after being selected for the post by the county’s Superior Court judges. He’s been a prosecutor with the county for 16 years. Most recently, he’s been working with the DA’s Major Crimes Unity, working with a multi-agency task force targeting domestic, and international drug trafficking.

Ventura County has cleared the last big hurdle towards making critical repairs to a levee which federal officials say might not be able to handle a massive storm.

Ventura County Supervisors approved studies aimed at upgrading the earth and rock levee on parts of the Santa Clara River in the Oxnard area.

The Santa Barbara bicycle master plan has been supported by city leaders to make the streets safer for bike riders and drivers.

It was called a suspicious device when it was found in the aisle of a South Coast Walmart a month ago, and investigators now say it was a chemical weapon created with instructions found on the internet.   Now, there's been an arrest in the case.

The latest research on autism shows that one in 68 children in the United States are on the autism spectrum.

Now a Ventura County-based university is establishing a new center to initially provide information, and eventually perhaps services, to those living with autism in the region.

A Conejo Valley woman embarks on a six-day horseback ride on Monday through the Santa Monica Mountains of Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

Ruth Gerson, who’s 81-years young and full of adventure, says she’s excited to ride the 67-mile Backbone Trail -- from Point Mugu State Park in Ventura County to Will Rogers State Historic Park in Los Angeles -- with four of her female friends.  

“This is not just for young people," she said. "This is for anyone who wants to do it.”

A Ventura County woman who spearheaded a program to train search dogs and their handlers for disasters has recently been recognized for her efforts.

Eighty-two-year-old Wilma Melville of Santa Paula founded the Ojai-based National Disaster Search Dog Foundation in 1996 and recently received the Award of Achievement for Humanitarian Efforts from the Ninety-Nines, the International Organization of Women Pilots.

An elderly man is hit and killed on a morning walk and the search is on for the person responsible. 

Family members in a Goleta Valley neighborhood have confirmed 88 year old Miguel Gutierrez Vargas has died from his injuries sustained in a hit and run accident Thursday morning.


Two traffic accidents are disrupting travel in northern Santa Barbara County this afternoon.

The California Highway Patrol reopened the #2 lane of southbound US 101 south of Buellton at 12:30.

The #1 lane will remain closed until further notice.

All lanes were closed at Santa Rosa Rd around 9:45 Thursday morning after a pickup truck and trailer went through a railing at Three Bridges.



A vegetation fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in the Lake Sherwood area of Ventura County.

The Sherwood Fire has now grown to between 30 and 45 acres.

It was first reported at 3:45 this afternoon, close to the 100 block of China Flats Road, an area of light-to-moderate brush.
