Ventura Control officials say that just in time for the holiday weekend, a combination of higher than average ocean tides, warmer than usual water temperatures, and prevailing winds kicked up a big mosquito problem.
A large population of Salt Marsh mosquitoes breeding in the Point Mugu area has spread out through much of western Ventura County. Officials say the wind has pushed them as far inland as Newbury Park.
The good news is that Salt Marsh mosquitos aren’t involved in transmitting diseases like West Nile Virus. But, they are aggressive biters, and they are day biters, unlike many other types of mosquitoes which tend to have most of their activity between dusk and dawn.
Environmental Health officials say with the holiday weekend here, if you’re going to be outside, prepare yourself with mosquito repellent.
