Virtually Tackling Mental Health Challenges In The Latinx Community In Ventura County

Teen Latinas have some of the highest rates of suicide amongst their peers.

So Oxnard Performing Arts Center has put together a virtual event aimed to tackle mental health challenges in the Latinx community.

Oxnard film-maker Arcelia Martinez is taking part in a free virtual salon to discuss the subject.

She says it's important that the community gets talking about the issue.

"We realised that there are many taboos in the Latino community that we don't address. We found that there's not a word for mental health. So how do you address something when there's not even a word?" she told KCLU.

This virtual event is a mix of a panel discussion, conversation, storytelling, and art.

Salons are a platform for the community to learn, ask, and be engaged in this important issue.

The Salon is focused on Mental Health Stress Factors and will take place on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at 2 pm via Zoom.

It’s free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required. The event will be professionally translated by Bridging Voices-Uniendo Voces.
