It was an emotional day Wednesday for family members, friends, and members of the law enforcement community as a ceremony was held to honor the Ventura County Sheriff’s sergeant who died in the Borderline Bar And Grill Attack. It was a day to remember Ventura County Sheriff’s Sergeant Ron Helus.
He charged into the bar last November 7th when the attack was underway. While he was fatally wounded, he’s credited with saving countless lives because the gunman then killed himself. On Wednesday, a section of Highway 101 near the nightclub was dedicated to him.
Karen Helus is Ron’s widow. She says the gesture means a lot to her family. Signs have been placed on a 3.4 miles stretch of the 101 near the Borderline’s location in Thousand Oaks, one on the southbound side of the freeway, and one on the northbound side. Helus says she misses her husband every day, but think’s he would be okay with his sacrifice knowing he saved lives.
County Sheriff Bill Ayub says Helus didn't hesisitate when he needed to go confront evil, and his swift, selfless, and decisive action saved lives.
