Ventura County School District Cancels Classes Because Of Power Shutoff Concerns

A school district in Ventura County has cancelled classes, and all activities Thursday and Friday because of concern that high winds may prompt a Public Safety Power Shutoff affecting its campuses.

The Fillmore United School District announced Wednesday night that it was taken the action because Southern California Edison had parts of Fillmore on the potential power shutdown list.  The action also includes the closure of the district's campuses for the two days, as well as the district's offices.

Dangerous wind in the forecast for parts of Thursday and Friday in Ventura and Los Angeles Counties led to Edison opening the door to precautionary power shutoffs.  The idea is that turning off the power could reduce the chance of power lines accidentally starting brush fires during the high wind event.
