Ventura County Mother Gets 37 Years To Life Sentence For Killing Three Year Old Daughter

The mother of a three year old Ventura County girl who was murdered could spend the rest of her life behind bars for the killing.

Mayra Chavez received a 37 years to life sentence for the death of Kimberly Lopez. The Oxnard woman was convicted of second degree murder, as well as other charges for covering up the little girl’s death.

Prosecutors say Chavez abused the child, leading to her death in 2015. They say Chavez and the child’s father, Omar Lopez then disposed of the body in Mexico.

It was never recovered.

Chavez was convicted after Lopez testified against her. He's expected to receive a 14 year prison sentence for child endangerment.

Earlier this month, Chavez’s mother received a year jail sentence for her role in helping to cover up the killing.
