Ventura County Man Gets 12 Year State Prison Sentence For Fatal Stabbing Of Stepson

A Ventura County man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for fatally stabbing his stepson. Howard Novack was convicted of voluntary manslaughter for the August, 2016 death of Kelly Hughes in the Simi Valley home where they both lived.

Prosecutors say the two had been at odds for some time.

Novack’s attorney argued the stabbing was an act of self defense, but a jury felt the voluntary manslaughter conviction was appropriate for the death of the 28 year old man.
