Ventura County Grand Jury Raises Issues About Dam Safety

A new Ventura County Grand Jury report is raising questions about the safety of some dams in and adjacent to the county.

The report looked at data on more than 20 dams, and says four dams have existing or potential deficiencies.

It says there are issues with the Matilija Dam, which is in the process of being removed. The Grand Jury says there are also risks from the Castaic, Bouquet Canyon, and Santa Felicia Dams, but that the operators of those structures are taking steps to improve their safety.

The report says that the County Office of Emergency Services and the dam operators need to come up with plans to deal with potential dam failures.

The Grand Jury says there are no adequate plans in place to warn people who could potentially be inundated by a dam break.
