Ventura County has a new Chief Public Defender, and it’s the first time a Latina has held the post.
Ventura County Supervisors approved the selection of Claudia Bautista for the post. She’s been with the Public Defender’s Office for nearly two decades, moving her way up through the ranks to become Assistant Public Defender before her promotion to the top spot.
Bautista fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Todd Howeth. He retired after 30 years with the Public Defender’s Office, including three years as Chief Public Defender.
The office provides representation in criminal, juvenile, mental health and probate matters for people unable to afford a private attorney.
