Ventura County Developing Efforts To Partner With Cities To Create Homeless Shelters

Ventura County is trying to finalize plans to create a countywide homeless shelter system in cooperation with the county’s ten cities.

The proposal developed by county staff members calls for the county to match each city’s spending for shelters, and their operations on a 50-50 basis.

The county, and the City of Ventura have identified a possible site for one year round shelter, and are negotiating a deal to try to get it open no later than the winter of 2019. The hope is that depending on the interest of cities, more can be established to help get people off the streets.

County officials say they realize there is a limit to the capacity, but are hoping to do as much as they can. County Supervisors will look at the plans when they meet on Tuesday.
